Online Bible Study: Advent 2025

What is online Bible Study?
This guided Bible study is designed to help you dig into Scripture on your own while also giving you clear prompts for meaningful discussion with others. Whether you’re studying at home or connecting with fellow participants at church, this resource aims to foster deeper understanding and shared reflection.

Overview
This Bible study on Revelation will accompany our journey through Advent, Nov 30 - Dec 24. Each of the 5 lessons will include a Bible reading, some notes about the passage, and questions for reflection. This edition of our online Bible study will conclude Jan 3.

Advent
The four traditional themes of Advent are:
  1. Hope – Looking forward to the coming of Christ, both in His birth at Bethlehem and His return in glory. The scriptural focus is on the prophets’ promises of the Messiah (e.g., Isaiah 9:2–7).
  2. Peace – Remembering Christ as the Prince of Peace who reconciles us to God. The scriptural focus is on John the Baptist’s call to prepare the way (e.g., Isaiah 40:3–5; Luke 3:1–6).
  3. Joy – Rejoicing in God’s salvation drawing near. The scriptural focus is on Mary’s Magnificat and the shepherds’ joy (e.g., Luke 1:46–55; Luke 2:8–14).
  4. Love – Celebrating God’s love made manifest in Christ. The scriptural focus is on God’s promise fulfilled in the Incarnation (e.g., John 3:16; Luke 2:1–20).
Week 1 - Nov 30 - Dec 6
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, Light of the World, as we begin this season of waiting, open our eyes to our hope in You. Reveal Yourself to us as the Alpha and the Omega, our beginning and our end. Strengthen our hope as we listen to Your Word. Amen.

Scripture Passage
Revelation Chapter 1

Key Themes
  • Revelation unveils Christ, not secrets
  • Jesus stands among His churches
  • Hope grounded in Christ’s sovereign presence

Notes
  • Without Christ, the churches stand in danger of judgment; His penetrating gaze exposes our faithlessness.
  • Yet He walks among us, holding His people in His hand. He speaks, “Do not be afraid,” showing that the Holy One stands with His church in grace.

Reflection Questions
  1. Where does fear overshadow hope in my life?
  2. How does Revelation chapter 1 change the way I imagine Jesus today?
  3. What would it mean to live this week as someone held in His right hand?

Week 2 - Dec 7 - 13
Opening Prayer
Almighty God, You reign over all things from Your heavenly throne. Turn our hearts toward Your peace, which the world cannot give. As we behold the Lamb who was slain, quiet our anxieties and draw us into Your worship. Amen.

Scripture Passage
Revelation Chapters 4 and 5

Key Themes
  • The true center of creation is God’s throne
  • The Lamb’s victory brings peace
  • Worship reorients us to reality

Notes
  • We often look for peace in earthly powers, achievements, or control, rather than before God’s throne.
  • The Lamb has conquered. True peace flows from His sacrifice, not our striving; He makes us a kingdom of priests.

Reflection Questions
  1. When I feel anxious or overwhelmed, where do I usually turn for peace?
  2. What about the heavenly throne room gives me comfort?
  3. How can worship reshape my sense of peace this week?

Week 3 - Dec 14 - 20
Opening Prayer
Gracious Lord, You gather people from every nation to rejoice before Your throne. As we meditate on Your Word, fill us with the joy that comes from Your salvation, even in times of sorrow or struggle. Let our witness shine with Your joy. Amen.

Scripture Passage
Revelation7:9-11 and Revelation 11:1-13

Key Themes
  • Joy of the redeemed before the throne
  • Joy through trials: robes washed in the Lamb’s blood
  • The church’s faithful witness

Notes
  • Suffering, grief, and persecution remind us the world is broken and our own strength insufficient.
  • The Lamb shepherds His people. Joy is not a feeling we manufacture but a gift rooted in Christ’s victory and the promise that “God will wipe every tear.”

Reflection Questions
  1. Where do I struggle to find joy right now?
  2. What does Revelation teach me about joy that cannot be shaken?
  3. How might God be calling me to witness with joyful faithfulness?
Week 4 - Dec 21 - 27
Opening Prayer
God of steadfast love, tear down the false loves that capture our hearts, and draw us into the embrace of Christ, our Bridegroom. As we study Your Word, let us see Your faithfulness and prepare us for the wedding feast of the Lamb. Amen.

Scripture Passage
Revelation 18:1-19:10

Key Themes
  • False loves of Babylon vs. the faithful love of Christ
  • God’s judgment is ultimately an act of redeeming love
  • The wedding feast: God unites Himself to His people

Notes
  • Babylon exposes how easily our hearts cling to idols—comfort, wealth, power, reputation—revealing our unfaithfulness.
  • Christ, the faithful Bridegroom, gives Himself entirely for His Bride. The wedding feast is pure gift: we are clothed in His righteousness, not our worthiness.

Reflection Questions
  1. What “Babylons” tempt my heart this season?
  2. How does the image of Christ as Bridegroom deepen my understanding of God’s love?
  3. What would preparing for the wedding feast look like in daily life?
Week 5 - Dec 28 - Jan 3
Opening Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, You are the Light no darkness can overcome. As we await Your coming, fill us with longing for the New Creation. Let Your promise, “Behold, I am making all things new,” renew our faith and strengthen our hope. Amen.

Scripture Passage
Revelation Chapters 21 and 22

Key Themes
  • God dwelling with His people forever
  • Creation renewed, healed, restored
  • Living now in anticipation of Christ’s return

Notes
  • The old world is passing away; sin and death have no lasting future. All false security is stripped away.
  • God Himself wipes every tear. He gives water of life without payment. Christ’s invitation is pure grace: “Come.”

Reflection Questions
  1. Which part of the New Creation vision do I find most comforting?
  2. How does this promise encourage me in my present struggles?
  3. What practices help me live with a “Come, Lord Jesus” posture?
