Summer Bible Study
In the Summer of 2024, our Summer Bible study explored the Augsburg Confession. This Summer we will dive into Luther's Large Catechism (also in the Book of Concord).
Luther's Large Catechism is a foundational teaching tool of the Lutheran Church, written by Martin Luther in 1529. It was intended to provide clear and practical instruction in the basics of the Christian faith, especially for pastors and heads of households.

Luther's Large Catechism is a foundational teaching tool of the Lutheran Church, written by Martin Luther in 1529. It was intended to provide clear and practical instruction in the basics of the Christian faith, especially for pastors and heads of households.
5 Key Teachings from the LC include:
- The Ten Commandments Teach God's Will for Life: Luther emphasizes that the Ten Commandments are not just rules but a guide to loving God and neighbor. They show how God wants us to live and reveal our need for His grace when we fall short.
- The Apostles’ Creed Confesses True Faith: The Creed teaches what God has done for us—creation by the Father, redemption through the Son, and sanctification by the Holy Spirit. It summarizes the story of salvation and grounds Christian identity in God's work.
- Prayer Connects Us to God: In the section on the Lord’s Prayer, Luther teaches that prayer is how believers speak to God as children speak to a loving father—freely, confidently, and regularly. The prayer shapes how we trust, forgive, and live.
- Baptism Brings Daily Renewal: Luther teaches that Baptism is not just a past event but a daily reality—a source of forgiveness, identity, and strength to resist sin. It marks the beginning of a lifelong journey with Christ.
- The Lord’s Supper Gives Christ’s True Body and Blood: The Catechism affirms that in Holy Communion, Christ gives His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. This sacrament strengthens faith, unites believers, and assures them of God’s grace.
Self-Guided Bible Study
Join our confirmands as they study the Gospel of Luke and the Epistle of James this summer. As you read take notes and consider the journaling questions on this page.
The links above will take you to Biblegateway.com where you can compare different translations. Our congregation uses the English Standard Version (ESV) but you can also compare this with other translations such as the NKJV and the NASB.

Journaling
As you read and study, reflect on the following questions:
- Who is Christ for me?
- How is this passage interpreting me?
- In this passage, how is this story also my story?
- How am I reminded of my baptism?
- How am I terrified and disrupted?
- How am I being given a new beginning in this passage?
- How does this passage forgive me of my sin?
- How am I called to follow Christ?
